Granville, Ohio

Granville is a village founded by settlers from Granville, Massachusetts, a town of which it now has three times the population. Pioneer settlers also had strong ties to Wales. As late as the 1950's there were still a number of village residents who could speak the Welsh language. A hilly area northeast of the village is known as the Welsh Hills, in recognition of the region's early cultural links to Wales and in appreciation of its physical resemblence to that old country of origin. Granville is home to Denison University.

William Rainey Harper was never a president of Denison University. Harper, one of America's greatest academics and founding president of the University of Chicago, held his first professorship at Denison, but he was never president. Online archives available through the official Denison University web site will confirm that he never held the office of president at that university.
